Journal of the Civil War Era Submission

Welcome to the Journal of the Civil War Era.

Manuscripts: Submissions should be double spaced and not exceed 11,000 words, including notes. The Journal of the Civil War Era uses The Chicago Manual of Style’s format for citations. Please refer to the University of North Carolina Press style guide for additional guidelines on style. Submissions should contain no information that identifies the author.

Abstract and Keywords:  You must include an abstract and keywords. The abstract should be concise -- between 4 and 8 sentences, or around 100-150 words -- and should provide a clear idea of the main arguments and conclusions of your essay.  Where possible, avoid the personal pronoun and use an impersonal voice instead. For example: “This essay discusses . . .” rather than: “In this essay, I discuss . . .” Finally, please suggest 5–10 keywords that describe the content of the essay and would help potential readers find your article when searching online. Keywords are equivalent to terms in an index in a printed work. All keywords should appear in the abstract and should not be too general.

Authorship and exclusivity: In submitting a manuscript to the JCWE, you confirm that the manuscript has not been previously published or published in a substantially similar form elsewhere. You confirm that the manuscript has not been submitted for review to another journal while under review by this journal and will not be submitted to any other journal. You confirm that the manuscript contains no material the publication of which could be construed as libelous or would violate any copyright or other personal or proprietary right of any person or entity. And you confirm that you will defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the Publisher, the Center, and Journal Editors, against all suits, proceedings, or claims that may be taken on the ground that said article is in such violation.
