About ARC Geophysical Research

ARC Geophysical Research is an online-only open access journal published by the Academic Research Community (ARC) Alliance for the geosciences by the geoscience community.  ARC-GR publishes peer-reviewed manuscripts from all areas in geosciences as well as fostering scientific bridges to related fields.  The published research showcases mechanistic understanding that is general, consequential, and transferable beyond the specifics of the original study.  The journal seeks to reflect a diversity of research techniques and invites theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches, or combinations thereof that advance fundamental understanding. The journal offers flexible article length and formats to allow authors to reach a broad audience while maintaining the highest scientific rigor sought by specialists.

Focus and Scope

ARC Geophysical Research covers all areas of the geosciences dealing with the biosphere, hydrosphere/cryosphere, atmosphere, the geosphere, and connections between them as well as interactions with the climate system.  The scope is also reflected by ARC-GR’s acceptance criteria that seeks to ensure manuscripts meet one or more of the following measures:

  • Significantly advance the state of the science.
  • Present theoretical, experimental, and/or computational-based discovery.
  • Establish novel connections between areas within the geosciences.

Submission Checklist

Competing Interests

If authors have competing interests, they must disclose them in the Comments to the Editor section at the end of the submission process.

Submission Types

ARC-GR will publish five different types of submissions: editorials, perspectives, research, reviews, and comments. Editorials are infrequent contributions from the Editors in Chief elucidating important developments or changes in the journal leadership or scope. Perspectives are visionary contributions of special significance to the field, which are typically not more than 10 pages in length. Reviews are timely and important syntheses of the literature in evolving areas and/or connecting previously disparate bodies of knowledge. Comments are contributions related to a previously published paper. The potential submission of perspectives, reviews, and comments must be approved prior to submission to ensure that the high standards for such contributions have a potential to be satisfied. Most submissions will be research manuscripts in which the length should be consistent with the intellectual contributions made. Research manuscripts should present sufficient information to reproduce the work, be concise, and not require supplemental information.

Submission Formats

The initial submission of any contribution should be in PDF format.  No special formatting is necessary at review stage.  Upon acceptance of a manuscript, all contributions must be formatted using the journal’s LaTeX template to ensure uniformity and reduce production costs. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure their article has been checked for grammar, spelling, appropriate referencing, formatted using the provided LaTeX style guide, and carefully proofread.

Submission Components

Submissions include a PDF of the manuscript; a statement by the authors of the fundamental contribution of the work of widespread significance needed to meet the requirements for publication in ARC-GR; a complete listing of all authors, their affiliations, and contact information; a list of potential reviewers; a statement of financial support of the work; a statement of data and computer code availability; and a declaration of potential conflicts of interest. In the "Comments to Editor" box in the final step of submission, please suggest at least two potential Editors in Chief to handle the submission and three potential peer reviewers.

Submission Standards

All submissions must be written to a high standard of excellence. Manuscripts not sufficiently well crafted and organized will be returned to the authors without undergoing peer review.  Manuscripts will also be screened for plagiarism and use of generative AI, neither of which is allowed.
