Promoting a Sense of Belonging and Engagement Through an Appreciative and Strengths-Based Culture
Abstract
In 2019, The College of Health Professions at Virginia Commonweath University began to explore the use of employee strengths and Appreciative Inquiry within our leadership. The goal was to create an inclusive workplace culture in which everyone would want to work. Such employee engagement affects performance outcomes, the quality of work, recruitment, retention, and overall well-being (Clifton & Harter, 2021). This article describes an example from one college that facilitates an appreciative culture within a higher education setting through the use of Appreciative Inquiry and the Gallup Clifton Strengths. With over five years of practice, the College has been a model for supporting the broader application of strengths and Appreciative Inquiry across the health services campus.
